A newly published article, “Endogenous Repair in Vanishing White Matter” explores how the brain may attempt to repair the white-matter damage characteristic of Vanishing White Matter (VWM) disease.
This groundbreaking study was made possible through brain donations from VWM patients and their families. Their extraordinary generosity enables scientists to deepen their understanding of VWM and move closer toward effective treatments.
During the 2024 ULF Conference VWM session, Dr. Marianna Bugiani reflected emotionally on this work, sharing that “the greatest gift is the brain donation for research… postmortem brain is the best model.”
Under the guidance of Dr. Bugiani and Dr. Marjo van der Knaap, families who wish to contribute to this vital research can discuss autopsy arrangements with their local pediatrician or neurologist. The doctor should then contact Dr. Bugiani and Dr. van der Knaap to coordinate the appropriate procedures and protocols.
The ULF extends our deepest gratitude to the families who have made this research possible through their selfless contributions, and to the researchers dedicated to uncovering new insights into VWM.
