Margaret Halter serves as Vice President of the United Leukodystrophy Foundation (ULF), where she is honored to support individuals and families affected by leukodystrophies.

Margaret recently retired after more than 30 years in law enforcement, serving in corrections and investigative roles. Throughout her career, she was dedicated to advocating for individuals, protecting vulnerable populations, and working closely with families and communities during both challenging and meaningful times.

She holds degrees in Special Education, Criminal Justice, and Health and Human Services—reflecting her lifelong commitment to service, advocacy, and supporting individuals with diverse needs. Across her professional and volunteer work, Margaret has focused on strengthening communities, building partnerships, and ensuring that every individual is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

Margaret has also been deeply involved with Special Olympics for many years, helping coordinate programs and support athletes and their families. This work has reinforced her belief that communities grow stronger through inclusion, opportunity, and a shared commitment to helping every individual thrive.

Her connection to ULF is deeply personal. Margaret’s husband, John, is affected by Adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN), and their grandson, Eli, has been identified with X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). Margaret and her husband have been involved with the United Leukodystrophy Foundation since its inception in the early 1990s, giving her a longstanding perspective on the organization’s growth and impact. Through this journey, she has gained firsthand understanding of the challenges families face, as well as the strength that comes from connection, education, and compassionate support.

In addition to her leadership role, Margaret continues to serve as a ULF Ambassador. In this capacity, she has connected with families, supported outreach efforts, and helped share resources within the leukodystrophy community—further strengthening her commitment to ULF’s mission.

Margaret and John have been married for 43 years and live on a small farm, where they enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle and spending time with their family. Their lives are guided by a deep Catholic faith and a strong belief in serving others with compassion and purpose.

Because of her family’s journey, Margaret believes deeply that no family facing leukodystrophy should ever feel alone. Through her work with the United Leukodystrophy Foundation, she is committed to strengthening support, advocacy, and community for all those navigating these rare and challenging conditions.
