“Margaret and John Halter have lived in Mansfield, Ohio for the past 36 years; married for 42 years. They have two grown children and five grandchildren with their youngest grandson identified as having the ALD gene with Ohio’s New born Screening.

John lost a brother to ALD in 1978 and was diagnosed in 1989 with Adrenomyoneurapthy. Since the beginning Margaret and John have been involved in the ULF as participants (25+ years), Margaret served as a Board Member and Secretary, and now as an Ambassador to Region 2. Margaret facilitates a caregiver support group for the ULF and is actively involved with committees when needed.

Margaret and John’s involvement stems from a passion to share their journey (the good, bad, and ugly), and to help others find resources and support on their journey.

They would like to create a life full of adventures, avenues of independence, creating memories and support as someone navigates living a life with a leukodystrophy diagnosis. Many things people encounter with rare disease diagnosis can be full of challenges and obstacles. It is Margaret’s hope that by representing the ULF as an Ambassador, she can help navigate and support families with resources and support.

Margaret holds degrees in Special Education, Criminal Justice and Health and Human Services. Margaret currently works as a State Investigator for Individuals with ID (Intellectual Disabilities). Margaret volunteers as a coordinator for Special Olympics for the Northwest Region, in the county of Ashland, Ohio. In Margaret’s spare time she enjoys visits with her grandchildren, her garden, canning, and working on their farm.”
